    Household composition across the new Europe: Where do the new Member States fit in?

    In this paper we present indicators of household structure for 26 of the 27 countries of the post-enlargement European Union. As well as broad indicators of household type, we present statistics on single-person and extended-family households, and on the households of children and older people. Our main aim is to assess the extent to which household structure differs between the "old" and "new" Member States of the European Union. We find that most of the Eastern European countries may be thought of as lying on the same North-North-Western-Southern continuum defined for the "old" EU Member States, and constituting an "extreme form" of the Southern European model of living arrangements, which we term the "Eastern" model. However, the Baltic states do not fit easily onto this continuum

    Capable environments

    Purpose: To outline the role played by different aspects of the social, physical and organisational environments in preventing behaviour described as challenging in people with learning disabilities. Design/methodology/approach: Conceptual elaboration drawing on research and practice literature. Findings: Community placements for people with learning disabilities should develop the characteristics of capable environments. Such characteristics are associated with prevention of challenging behaviour and improved quality of life outcomes. Originality/value: The notion of the capable environment may help to shift the focus from the individual who displays behaviour described as challenging to the characteristics of the social, physical and organisational supports that they receive

    Social Media, News and Political Information during the US Election: Was Polarizing Content Concentrated in Swing States?

    US voters shared large volumes of polarizing political news and information in the form of links to content from Russian, WikiLeaks and junk news sources. Was this low quality political information distributed evenly around the country, or concentrated in swing states and particular parts of the country? In this data memo we apply a tested dictionary of sources about political news and information being shared over Twitter over a ten day period around the 2016 Presidential Election. Using self-reported location information, we place a third of users by state and create a simple index for the distribution of polarizing content around the country. We find that (1) nationally, Twitter users got more misinformation, polarizing and conspiratorial content than professionally produced news. (2) Users in some states, however, shared more polarizing political news and information than users in other states. (3) Average levels of misinformation were higher in swing states than in uncontested states, even when weighted for the relative size of the user population in each state. We conclude with some observations about the impact of strategically disseminated polarizing information on public life.Comment: Data Mem

    Enhanced Thermoelectric Properties of a Semiconducting Two-Dimensional Metal–Organic Framework via Iodine Loading

    We report the first result of a study in which molecular iodine has been incorporated via incipient wetness impregnation into the two-dimensional semiconducting metal–organic framework (MOF) Cu3(2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene)2 Cu3(HHTP)2 to enhance its thermoelectric properties. A power factor of 0.757 μW m–1 K–2 for this MOF was obtained which demonstrates that this provides an effective route for the preparation of moderate-performance thermoelectric MOFs

    A novel low molecular weight nanocomposite hydrogel formulation for intra-tumoural delivery of anti-cancer drugs

    Herein, an injectable formulation composed of a low molecular weight gelator (LMWG) based hydrogel and drug-loaded polymeric nanocapsules (NCs) is described. The NCs, made of hyaluronic acid and polyglutamic acid and loaded with C14-Gemcitabine (GEM C14), showed a size of 40 and 80 nm and a encapsulation efficiency > 90%. These NCs exhibited a capacity to control the release of the encapsulated drug for more than 1 month. GEM C14-loaded NCs showed activity against various cancer cell lines in vitro; cell growth inhibition by 50% (GI50) values of 15 ± 6, 10 ± 9, 13 ± 3 and 410 ± 463 nM were obtained in HCT 116, MIA PaCa-2, Panc-1 and Panc-1 GEM resistant cell lines respectively. Nanocomposite hydrogels were prepared using the LMWG - N4-octanoyl-2’-deoxycytidine and loaded for the first time with polymeric NCs. 2% and 4% w/v nanocapsule concentrations as compared to 8% w/v NC concentrations with 2 % and 3% w/v gelator concentrations gave mechanically stronger gels as determined by oscillatory rheology. Most importantly, the nanocomposite formulation reformed instantly into a gel after injection through a needle. Based on these properties, the nanocomposite gel formulation has potential for the intratumoural delivery of anticancer drugs

    Mechanistic study on the asymmetric synthesis of the Wieland-Miescher ketone analogs

    The organocatalyzed synthesis of the Wieland‐Miescher ketone (WMK) via N‐sulfonyl‐binamprolinamide catalysis was investigated using experimental and computational tools. A mechanistic proposal is presented describing the origin of the high enantioselectivity, which rivals that of aldolases. The computational study reveals that the role of the prolinamide catalyst is to lower the reaction barrier and determine the stereoselectivity of the product achieved, while the role of the carboxylic acid is to facilitate proton transfer steps. The effect of the acid co‐catalyst was confirmed by experiments. The role of the structure of the BINAM backbone and the effect of the sulfonamide group are uncovered experimentally and computationally. Calculations show that a rigid highly defined catalytic pocket due to covalent and steric interactions induces conformational changes in the triketone substrate to maximize interactions

    Earthworms and mesofauna from an isolated, alkaline chemical waste site in Northwest England

    Post-industrial sites across Europe may have developed over periods in excess of a century, often leading to poor nutrient soils with noxious constituents and extreme pH values. One such site, Nob End (Bolton, UK), a toxic tip created in the 1800s from a sodium carbonate factory, represents an “island of alkalinity in an acidic sea” where the weathering process (from pH 12) has provided a suitable environment for a rich alkali-loving flora and hence, deserving its designation as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Despite their importance, the belowground communities have not been investigated and for this reason, in this study, we explored how soil macro- and mesofauna communities respond to extreme pH values in a system that has also experienced recent changes in management practices. As expected, earthworms, mites, insects and woodlice numbers were significantly higher and the community diversity enriched at the (now pH 8) alkaline sites, whereas in areas where acidic boiler waste was historically deposited, enchytraeids, collembolans and dipteran larvae populations dominated the soil communities. Surprisingly, site management (cutting back of scrub) in the alkaline soil areas had a significant positive effect on soil macro-fauna by promoting numbers and biomass, but severely reduced the microarthropod populations. A transect investigation across an increasing pH gradient (from 4.5 to 8.0) was mirrored by a rise in earthworm numbers and species richness. Earthworms were further investigated surrounding the site, seeking potential sources of colonisation, with the majority of species at Nob End also present in adjacent non-industrially-influenced areas. This work demonstrates that soil fauna can ultimately colonise extreme edaphic conditions and these extreme environments have not prompted the development of specific faunal communities. As management of above-ground communities significantly influenced soil invertebrate communities, this could represent an important restoration practice to improve soil structure and fertility at this polluted site

    Optical vortex trap for resonant confinement of metal nanoparticles

    The confinement and controlled movement of metal nanoparticles and nanorods is an emergent area within optical micromanipulation. In this letter we experimentally realise a novel trapping geometry near the plasmon resonance using an annular light field possessing a helical phasefront that confines the nanoparticle to the vortex core (dark) region. We interpret our data with a theoretical framework based upon the Maxwell stress tensor formulation to elucidate the total forces upon nanometric particles near the particle plasmon resonance. Rotation of the particle due to orbital angular momentum transfer is observed. This geometry may have several advantages for advanced manipulation of metal nanoparticles
